Summary of the DigitalFoodLab Report: Foodtech in Europe 2023
In 2022, investments in foodtech startups in Europe decreased by 36% to 5,9 billion EUR compared to 9,2 billion EUR in 2021. Excluding the heavily saturated delivery segment, the remaining areas of foodtech experienced a 21% increase in investment scale year-on-year. Considering the current market situation, this is very good news.
The number of funding rounds for early-stage startups exploring different areas of the food industry only decreased slightly. The food market still faces many challenges. However, startups seeking second and subsequent rounds of funding had a harder time. In 2022, only 17% of startups managed to secure additional financing (compared to 25% the previous year). In our opinion, this is largely due to the limited number of investment funds operating in foodtech areas other than delivery.
It is worth highlighting the foodtech segments that performed exceptionally well in 2022 – agritech, with a 49% year-on-year investment growth, and supply chain management, with a 263% year-on-year investment growth. For more data, please refer to the report.
